C., OCTOBER 15, 1954 Dr. Preyer received his de gree in the field of history, but from the University of Virginia. He is teaching courses in the devel opment of economic history, and other related courses in the eco nomics department. . * js ■1 is ■ w ■ Dr. Norris Preyer Dr. Burrows had his doctorate conferred by the University of Wisconsin in the field of history. He is teaching in the history de partment. With these three new doctors, the Guilford College faculty now has fourteen Ph. D.'s among its nembers. EVENTS OF THE DAY Tomorrow, Saturday, October 16, is Homecoming. For the benefit of all the alumni and friends of the college who have not had an op portunity to inspect the new Kath rine Hine Shore Hall, the dormi tory will be open for visitors from 12:00 noon until 2:00 in the after noon. At 1:30 registration of guests begins. This year registration will be near the ticket booth at Hobbs Field. At 2:00 the parade featuring the floats of every dormitory and sec tion will begin. The floats will leave from the back of their dor mitory or section, follow the road to Hobbs Field, and circle around the field. Kickoff time for the Guilford- Lenoir Rhyne football game is 2:30. During the half-time, Sue Genz, Homecoming Queen last year, will crown Thelma Buckner, the newly elected Queen. The other members of the Homecoming Court are: Peggy Jones, Betsy Marklin, Lila Tice, and Dot Pleasant. The floats will again parade around the field, and the judges will decide and announce the win ning float and the dormitory with the best decorations. At 5:00 there will be a barbecue supper on west campus. Alumni aAd guests of the college are invit ed to the barbecue. There will be a slight charge for alumni and guests. The Women's Athletic Associa tion is sponsoring the Homecom ing Dance this year at 8:30. The dance will be free. Formal dress is optional. SCA PLANS The Student Christian Associa tion cabinet worked out plans for he coming year at their retreat on October 9th. They have decided to take the responsibility for one chapel pro gram each month and to have some sort of a program every Sun day night at 7:30. These latter programs will be either vespers or religious services. In addition to these regular ac tivities, the SCA will sponsor a square dance October 23, with professional assistance; an initia tion service for new members the following day, and the annual Re 'is;ious Emphasis Wrek which, will 'Ms year b° held February 7-12. Other activities will be announced from time to time. NUMBER 2 Korean Student At Guilford During the opening days of the Korean War when Seoul was about to be captured by the advancing North Korean armies, Sue Kyun Suh ("Su"), the Korean student now at Guilford, was forced to es cape by swimming the river out side of the city which was in the path of his escape. Later, after this nightmarish experience, he enlist ed in the South Korean army and eventually acquired the rank of captain. These events terminated his studies that he had been carry ing on at Seoul University, Seoul, Korea, where he was in his fourth year of engineering school. Because of the difficulty in pro curing a discharge, it was three and one-half years before "Su" could obtain even a temporary discharge from the military to con tinue with his educational work. Through his brother, who is living in the States, he obtained informa tion about educational institutions in America, and more specifically about Guilford College. At Guilford "Su" has continued in his engineering interests by tak ing advanced science courses (Physics 31, Chemistry 21 and 23, and Calculus 41).
